Parametric modeling

Discussion started by BambooCGI

Hi, again!

Continuing the parametric modeling topic, could someone here recommend me please forums/websites of anything where I can find information or new tutorials about parametric modeling, the node system, and so on? Cause cases explained on the official website of RailClone and some tutorials on YouTube are good, but not enough.

Depends on the software. You mentioned RailClone, so I assume you work with 3dsmax? There are a lot of articles and blogs about parametric modeling in 3dsmax, but most of them are based on using just the modifier stack with editable poly. There are also many out there for Para3d. That's probably one of the most popular "true" parametric modeling plugins for 3dsmax. Plenty of videos on Para3d out there too.

thank you, definitely I'll check that Para3d. But also, could you mention some forums where I can find more specific info on that topic?

You should be able to find all the info you need about it at torabiarchitect.com/parametric-array/

Parametric modeling is a modeling process with the ability to change the shape of model geometry as soon as the dimension value is modified. Parametric modeling is implemented through the design computer programming code such as a script to define the dimension and the shape of the model.

In simple terms, parametric modeling is just a method by which definable parameters are utilized to create an end product or model. These parameters can define the shape and or dimension of a model and can be adjusted or changed at any point in the creation process. 3dsmax can do this a number of ways, although by itself it is quite limited. Plugins are usually used to accomplish this. For example, one of the most famous parametric modeling applications is Grasshopper for Rhino. This is true parametric modeling in that a mathematically driven set of node structures can be used to create almost any shape or geometric form from scratch, with every aspect of the object being driven by parameters that can be changed at any time to alter various aspects of the model output. 3dsmax by default has no ability to do that to such a degree. However, Para3d is very similar to Grasshopper in many aspects, with the fundamental exception being that it is working with far more topologically simple polygonal base mesh in 3dsmax. Grasshopper is using the more topologically complex and structurally sound NURBS curves and surfaces of Rhino.
