Similar looking models based on real aircraft.

Discussion started by HorizonSystems

For my latest my i have been making a stylized a-29 super tucano. however, it looks very similar to another super tucano model due to them both being the same base aircraft and i was wondering if this could get me in trouble. Does anybody know the answer?

If you designed it yourself, the geometry would be different.

It is quite different, will that be enough for me to be safe.

Yes. Just because there is another model of something on CGTrader, it doesn't mean that you can't put up another design of that particular model. Yours will be different, either more or less detailed, different graphics or bump maps (if you included them) and so forth. The buyers will decide which model they like. Some customers may be looking for something simple and others for something very detailed with a high polycount.

You are making the model based on someone else's intellectual property, what kind of safety you are talking about? IP owner might request to immediately remove your model from the marketplace at any moment. If they decide that they don't have anything more important to do they might even try to sue you for supposedly inflicted damage. If you want to feel completely safe, make bees and flowers, or something completely out of your head.

There are other models of it so i assume it's safe.

It would be the same if you'd be saying "i see some drivers driving well above allowed speed limit, so i assume it's safe if I'll do the same". I'm not saying that you will get into the trouble if you'll publish that model (assuming that it's created entirely by you), but there's no guarantee of any kind that you will never be told to remove it immediately.
